Val Verzasca 2013: Let there be splash, and flash

Creating stunning pictures with simple means, such as the creative use of speedlights was one of the key topics at the Verzasca photography workshop (Co-organized with Felix Peter). In both photographs a single speedlight was used, situated behind the model such that the flash becomes part of the composition, and the ambient light was underexposed by one or two stops. In this way it produces a nice rim light for the model and also dramatically backlights the splashing waterdrops.  Since there is considerably ambient light, a faster shutterspeed would have been necessary to completely freeze the drops (shutter speed was 1/250, at f11 and f10, respectively, and iso 100). Models: Céline & Céline Andrea.
